APC Could Regularise Vaccination & Deworming of Livestock

Barkani Village is situated in Gandharla GP of Bangomunda Tehsil in Balangir District of Odisha State. It is located 123 KM towards west from District headquarters Balangir. Housing 180 tribal families, Barkani Village has a total population of 750. Farming is the primary occupation of the village and only 10 individuals (present generation) and 20 families seasonally migrates to Mumbai and Hyderabad for search their livelihood.

Goat-rearing is a traditional source of livelihood for the community people. Sarswati Majhi, 45 years old wife of Agasti Majhi, rears goat since the last five years. From 2 goats, she could increase the flock size to 15 now.

But when her animals fell sick, she had to run pillar to post. In most cases she failed to identify the disease, due to lack of awareness on basics. Usually her goats affected from worm, mange, goat pox, scour, wound diseases etc. Sometimes she consulted local livestock inspector (L.I) for the prevention. But she did not receive regular services for her livestock.

When APC project launched in the village, SSS organised several village meetings to sensitise the communities on Goat/BYP rearing, organised orientation meeting for livestock, de-worming and vaccination with the support of Animal Resource (AR) department Bangomunda, livestock calendar sharing etc

In this process, SSS mobilised application for shed construction for livestock under various schemes of the govt.

Under the project Prani Mitra was identified and trained on proper livestock management. Required linkage established with animal resource department for regular vaccination and de-worming activities.

Now Saraswati would say, “I did not know about vaccination and de-worming till I joined PG”
